About cold
and warm metal forming
Among all manufacturing
processes, cold or warmmetal forming technology has a special place
because it helps to produce parts of superior mechanical properties
with no or minimum waste of material at high speeds.
Forming to net
or to near net shape dimensions will drastically eliminate or reduce
secondary operations (metal removal requirements) resulting in significant
material and energy savings.
Cold or warm
metal forming is economically attractive when a large number of
parts must be produced and/or mechanical properties required in
the end product can be realized only by a cold or warm forming process.
What is cold
or warm metal forming?
The starting material is a rod or coiled wire. The multistation
cold or warm metal forming machine will feed the rod or wire to
the cut-off station where it is sheared to the appropriate length
and then plastically deformed in one or more stations into a desired
shape of relatively complex configuration.
Benefits
of cold or warm metal forming
- Substitute for conventional production methods; e.g. turning,
milling, grinding, drilling and welding.
- Speed.
- Material saving and elimination of scrap.
- Consistently high mechanical properties.
- Superb product quality on geometry and accuracy, tolerances and
surface finish.
- Environmentally friendly.
